hba1c test for Diabetes Mellitus patients PRO Diagnostics Blog

Why diabetes mellitus is so dangerous?

In this blog read about importance of hba1c test and other diabetes blood tests. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is the most common type of diabetes. There is a 12% prevalence of diabetes in adults (Above 45years) in India. That means every one of 8 people has diabetes. And the most shocking fact is that 57% of these patients are undiagnosed

Uncontrolled diabetes leads to an increased risk of vascular disease and much of the burden of type 2 diabetes is caused by macrovascular (cardiovascular (CV), cerebrovascular, and peripheral artery disease) and microvascular (diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) complications.

That’s why Diabetes is so dangerous and requires regular monitoring to assess its growing effects on the body.

When to do diabetes screening test?

Diabetes Mellitus is a slow progressive noncommunicable disease where symptoms are also gradually progressing. Increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight reduction, increased appetite, and feeling a tingling sensation in your hands or feet, if you encounter such symptoms then it’s time to do a diabetes screening test.
A diabetes screening test is Fasting & Post Prandial Blood Sugar Test. It is recommended in all people above 45years of age every 3 years without any symptoms. And every six-monthly in people with the above symptoms or other contributing factors like overweight (BMI above 25), thyroid imbalance, PCOS patients, patients with hypertension, etc.

What are the important tests for Diabetes Mellitus?

Fasting Blood Sugar Test:

In this test, your blood sample will be collected after you have observed an overnight fast. A fasting blood sugar level of less than 100 mg/dL (5.6 mmol/L) is normal. A fasting blood sugar level from 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) is considered prediabetes. If it’s 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L) or higher on two separate tests, you have diabetes.

Post Prandial Glucose Test (PPBS):

This is a blood glucose test that decides the measure of a particular type of sugar, named glucose. In this test, Glucose is measured in the blood, particularly after a meal.
Ordinarily, blood glucose levels elevate marginally after eating a meal. This expansion causes the pancreas to discharge insulin, which helps the body expel glucose from the blood and store it for providing vital energy to the body. Individuals with diabetes may not create or react legitimately to insulin, which increases their blood glucose levels. High blood glucose levels can drastically harm the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and veins.

A 2-hour PPBS test measures blood glucose precisely 2 hours in the wake of eating a meal. By this point, glucose has generally retreated down in healthy individuals, yet it might, in any case, be raised in individuals with diabetes. Subsequently, it serves as a trial for whether an individual may have diabetes, or whether an individual who has diabetes is effectively controlling their blood glucose levels.

hba1c test:

hba1c test shows your normal glucose level for as long as 3 months. It quantifies the rate of glucose connected to hemoglobin and the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. The higher the glucose levels, the more hemoglobin one has with sugar attached to it. An hba1c test level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests shows that you have diabetes. An A1C somewhere around 5.7 and 6.4 percent demonstrates prediabetes. Beneath 5.7 is viewed as normal.

Urine Microalbumin:

A urine microalbumin test is a test to detect very small levels of a blood protein (albumin) in your urine. A microalbumin test is used to detect early signs of kidney damage in people who are at risk of developing kidney disease.

In diabetic patients, there is progressive damage to the kidneys which requires monitoring to avoid major complications.

  • Less than 30 mg/day is normal
  • Thirty to 300 mg/day may indicate early kidney disease (microalbuminuria)
  • More than 300 mg/day indicates more-advanced kidney disease (macroalbuminuria)

Urine Routine:

In Diabetes Mellitus patients, urinary tract infections are common. To assess evidence of infection, blood, sugar, proteins, ketones, bilirubin, etc. in Urine, Urine analysis is done.

Along with the above-mentioned tests, Lipid Profile (Cholesterol & Triglycerides), Hemogram, Insulin, Insulin antibodies, C peptides, and Creatinine are also done to monitor diabetes complications.
